Treetop Retreat: A Treehouse Build in Muskoka

Happy Labour day! Also known as the last cottage weekend of the summer… where we get to enjoy to last lake swims, boat rides & bonfires, this is a summer we won’t soon forget. In it’s honour, I want to share photos of this magical treehouse on lake Rosseau, Muksoka. Chris built it for friends and I decorated a few years ago, this was my very first design project and we had such a blast working on it together!

I love playing with colour in my designs, I usually get inspired by one item that speaks to me, in this case the colour palette was pulled from the stripes of a vintage Hudson Bay blanket found in the adjacent cottage. Using this palette in the treehouse creates continuity within the two spaces.

The plywood flooring was painted red for a pop of colour and the unfinished framed walls were painted white to create a rustic cabin vibe. Mixing in vintage items in a new build is also a great way to achieved that lived in cottage look, it’s also the most sustainable way to shop ;)

Almost everything used to style this room is vintage; the wrought iron bed frame spray painted yellow, the bird watching chart featuring birds native to the area, the cute scalloped wood shelf holds a few treasures like old books and Jim Beam bourbo…

The vintage Hershey’s map of Canada from the 70s was my best find because it encompasses all the colours on my palette and creates a large focus point above the bed. Chris even remembers having this map on the walls of his elementary class!

I also got two black & white photos of the lake which I got custom framed in different coloured wood to curate the collected look I was looking for. I found the map & photography at this great store in Toronto called Alexandre Antiques, which has the widest collection of antique maps & prints I’ve ever seen, It’s an amazing shop to find one of a kind wall decor with tons of history.

The treehouse’s front porch has the best views on the island and is such a quiet & cozy spot to curl up in a blanket to watch the stars!
