Design Plan - Charlotte's Patio Makeover

Chacha patio makeover.jpg

If you’re working from home like most of us are these days, you’re probably going stir crazy looking at your 4 walls. My dear friend Charlotte is a journalist working part time from home since social distancing begun about 2 months ago. She lives in an apartment on the second floor of a commercial building, on top of a Chinese restaurant to be more specific (dumplings for days!)

She really wants to spend more time outside given the current confinement regulations and she has a huge empty terrace at the back that isn’t very usable because of its state of disrepair. I’ve been working from home wondering what to do with all my energy and in need of some new projects so I decided this would be the perfect place to start!

THE INSPIRATION

My design plan is to create a soothing atmosphere using neutral colours, fresh whites, warm wood tones, rattan & terracotta pots with tons of plants!!!!

CRETE 2016

This vibe reminds me of our summer together in Greece in 2016! Yamas!

BEFORE

We’re working on a budget for this one, our plan is to do everythingourselves with the help of Chris, my babe & contractor extraordinaire of Made by McG! We’ll start by fixing the fence and refreshing it with a whitewash stain, which will brighten the whole space. In order to block the view to the broken-down buildings behind, we’ll repurpose old palettes into a privacy screen and hang potted plants to create a green wall.

Another issue we’re faced with is the restaurant’s giant exhaust fan which is loud & quite the eye sore. Our solution is to box in the aluminum pipe with lattice which will conceal it while still allowing air flow and to create a folding screen padded with insulation to place around the fan which will reduce the noise.

In order to increase functionality & flow we want to divide the terrace into 3 demarcated areas:

  • A lounge to have drinks & watch a movie with an outdoor sofa, coffee table, projector & lots of cushions.

  • A dining area to have dinner parties al fresco, with a picnic table, twinkling lights and a prep station.

  • A sitting area under the covered porch by the kitchen to have coffee outside in the morning.

I can’t wait to get started on the makeover once the weather improves. We have a lot of work to do, but I’m so excited for the challenge! Stay tuned for the full makeover ;)
